The Ministry's mandate, guiding vision and core functions.

The Ministry's published vision is accessible, equitable and inclusive quality education for sustainable development. Its mandate covers basic and secondary education from early childhood through senior secondary school.

Accessible, Equitable and Inclusive Quality Education for Sustainable Development.

Mandate

The Ministry is responsible for policy, planning, standards and delivery oversight across early childhood development, lower basic, upper basic and senior secondary education, together with adult and non-formal provision coordinated with responsible national institutions.

Core functions

  • Develop, review and implement national education policy
  • Prepare and monitor the education sector strategic plan
  • Set and monitor school and teaching standards
  • Develop and review the national curriculum and learning materials
  • Coordinate teacher preparation, deployment and professional development
  • Collect, manage and publish education statistics
  • Coordinate sector financing, budgeting and partner support
  • Support Regional Education Directorates in delivering services to schools
